Human Rights Considerations Important in Setting Proposed Minerals Resource Rent Tax

In response to the Federal Government’s consultation regarding the Mineral Resources Rent Tax, ALHR made a submission urging the Gillard Government to consider Australia’s international treaty obligations which obliged the Government to use “maximum available resources” to ensure the human rights of Australians.

UPR Australia: Submission on the Implementation of Recommendations

Following the Universal Periodic Review of Australia by the Human Rights Council in January 2011, the Commontwealth Attorney-General sought submissions on prioritisation and implementation of the HRC Working Group’s 145 recommendations. ALHR’s submission endorses the the comprehensive submission of the NGO Coalition and the Human Rights Law Resource Centre.

Cluster Munitions Implementation Legislation

In November 2010, Parliament tabled the “Criminal Code Amendment (Cluster Munitions Prohibition) Bill 2010” to implement Australia’s obligations under the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Disability discrimination will persist in Australian migration decisions

ALHR response to the Joint Standing Committee on Migration’s Report on its Inquiry into Migration Treatment of Disability, tabled 21 June 2010 report recommendations on the “health requirement” for visa applicants. ALHR made a submission to this inquiry on 19 July 2010.
