ALHR is excited to announce an important change to our membership arrangements. To fully realise our goals and provide a high quality service to members we need to increase our resources.

ALHR will begin to introduce 5 classes of paid membership from 7 May 2015.

Paid membership will enable ALHR to continually grow its capacity to both directly assist the victims of human rights violations in Australia and support lawyers in the practice of human rights law.

What does ALHR offer its members?

ALHR is one of Australia’s leading human rights organisations at the forefront of the human rights dialogue in Australia. We use our extensive experience and expertise in the principles and practice of international human rights law in order to advocate for greater Australian compliance with international human rights norms at a domestic and international level and promote and support lawyers’ practice of human rights law in Australia.

ALHR is a completely independent organisation that does not receive government funding.

Membership of ALHR provides unique opportunities to advocate for the protection of human rights. We are committed to the professional development of our members and offer a wide range of member benefits.

Why is ALHR introducing a paid membership scheme?

We are introducing paid membership subscriptions for a number of reasons. As the complexity of the environment increases ALHR needs to both lead the human rights debate and respond promptly to human rights issues which arise, while providing responsive, value-added professional development for our members.

We want to expand our capacity to provide high quality training, education, publication, CLE courses, conferences, seminars and mentoring to assist members to develop their knowledge of human rights law and incorporate human rights principles into their areas of legal practice.

It is essential that ALHR is aware of current trends, legislative changes, case law, and international developments such that we can provide up-to-date information and resources and continually develop more sophisticated forms of training and education for our members.

In order to achieve our goals we need the resources to develop more diverse ways to meaningfully engage with lawyers, the wider community, all forms of media and government, other NGOs and international human rights institutions.

Our long terms goals include engaging in and supporting strategic human rights litigation, further cementing ALHR’s place at the forefront of the human rights dialogue in Australia.

Lastly, ALHR is a professional association and whilst benefiting significantly from our volunteer contribution, is required to comply with increasingly regulatory and compliance regimens.

Paid membership will enable ALHR to continually grow is capacity to both directly assist the victims of human rights violations in Australia and support lawyers in the practice of human right law.

Without our membership ALHR would not exist. It is an organisation run by members, for members. We look forward to your ongoing contribution to ALHR and thank you for helping provide us with the tools we need to better serve you and the promotion and protection of human rights in Australia.
