Australian Lawyers for Human Rights recently put forward a submission to the Attorney Generals consultation on its draft Baseline Study for a National Human Rights Action Plan.
ALHR endorsed the Pretoria Statement on the Strengthening and Reform of the UN Human Rights Treaty Body System. In response to the Federal Government’s consultation regarding the Mineral Resources Rent Tax, ALHR made a submission urging the Gillard Government to consider Australia’s international treaty obligations which obliged the Government to use “maximum available resources” to ensure the human rights of Australians.
ALHR made a detailed submission to the Senate Inquiry into the provisions of the Migration Amenndment (Detention Reform and Procedural Fairness) Bill 2010. ALHR President Stephen Keim regularly writes for Brisbane Legal magazine. His latest column concerned challenges posed by the conflict in Libya to the principle of accountability.
Following the Universal Periodic Review of Australia by the Human Rights Council in January 2011, the Commontwealth Attorney-General sought submissions on prioritisation and implementation of the HRC Working Group’s 145 recommendations. ALHR’s submission endorses the the comprehensive submission of the NGO Coalition and the Human Rights Law Resource Centre.
ALHR member Liz Snell, provides an engaging and comprehensive report into the advocacy work of the Australian NGO Coalition at the Universal Periodic Review of Australia by the Human Rights Council in Geneva in January 2011.
