‘Asylum Seeking and the Law: the Minister, Human Rights and Accountability in Law’

Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) and the UQ Justice and the Law Society (JATL) presents a special CLE seminar update regarding the latest debacles in the Australian government?s asylum seeker policy and its human rights implications including:

(i) An analysis of the Full Federal Court?s recent decision in Minister for Immigration and Citizenship v SZQRB [2013] FCAFC 33

(ii) An update of conditions on Nauru and the issue of returning Hazaras to Afghanistan in circumstances where 30 Afghani MPs have urged the Australian government not to do so.

(iii) An update from on the ground in Afghanistan.

(iv) The effects of prolonged and indefinite detention.

Speakers:

(i) Darryl Rangiah SC – barrister-at-law.
(ii) Sonia Caton – Lawyer/Chair of the Refugee Council of Australia.
(iii) Dr Angus Francis – Principal Solicitor at the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service (RAILS)
(iv) Tracy Worrall – Director of the Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma.

The presentations will be followed by a short Q&A.
