Do we need an International law of Ecocide?

Date: Wed 12th March 2014

On 12 March, ALHR co-hosted by a public lecture with Australian Earth Laws Alliance and the International Commission of Jurists (Queensland). The event, at the Banco Court in Brisbane, was a lecture by UK Barrister Polly Higgins addressing the lack of a (legal) duty of care to care for the Earth, and talking about an international law of Ecocide. The event was chaired by ALHR’s Benedict Coyne, and the three other panellists speaking were Stephen Keim SC (Barrister-at-Law, former President of ALHR and Bar Association of Queensland Council Member), Dr Chris McGrath (Barrister-at-Law, Senior Lecturer at University of Queensland) and Michelle Maloney (Chair of EDO Qld and National Convenor of the Australian Earth Laws Alliance).

The event was well attended, with about 220 ALHR members and other. Funds raised will cover costs for ALHR and AELA, with a small amount also contributing to ALHR’s future activities. The proceedings will shortly be available on ALHR’s YouTube channel.

Thanks also to ALHR Queensland Committee member Janelle Fabio who helped with ushering and taking photos.
