Australian Lawyers for Human Rights President Appointed to NSW Premier’s LGBTQI+ Advisory Council
Australian Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) celebrates the appointment of our national president, Nicholas Stewart, on his appointment to the NSW Premier’s LGBTQI+ Advisory Council.
ALHR’s Vice President Kerry Weste said: “Nicholas Stewart’s appointment means that the NSW LGBTQI+ Advisory Council will have a senior human rights lawyer contributing to the work of the council as it progresses the State of NSW’s laws and policies to ensure the LGBTQI+ community is no longer on the outside of decision making. Nicholas worked hard on the campaign for two parliamentary inquiries and a judicial special commission of inquiry into NSW’s dark history of LGBTQ hate crimes and has led our LGBTIQ national subcommittee since 2017. We at ALHR celebrate Nicholas’s appointment and commend the NSW Government on its establishment of this critical council”
ALHR LGBTIQ+ co-chair Georgia Burke said: “NSW laws should be consistent with Australia’s international legal obligations. Nicholas Stewart’s appointment to the Premier’s LGBTQI+ Advisory Council will ensure that Australia’s international legal obligations are not forgotten as our state builds more inclusive laws and policies.”
