Submission on Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 (Qld)

April 29, 2010

On 28 April, the Queensland Committee of ALHR forwarded a submission to Queensland Police into the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 (Qld) (PPRA). The submission which may be viewed here focussed on key aspects of the PPRA that may impact upon different sectors of the community.

In particular, the submission addressed inherent indirect discrimination arising from provisions within the act and the need to ensure appropriate sensitivity for those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. In addition, the submissions raised concerns about the level of secrecy in the process that Queensland police are required to adhere to in order to obtain a covert search warrant and the effect this may have on the rights of the accused.
